Food and organic matter make up about 50-60% of the dining commons waste stream at UC Davis. We are taking strides to reducing that number every day by encouraging the decrease of food waste from both students and the kitchens in our dining facilities all across the UC Davis campus.
What happens to all of the wasted food and organic materials? We don't send it to a landfill, we recycle it into nutrient-rich compost which is used to grow more food!
In this video, one week's worth of compostable waste, about 6.5 tons worth, is delivered to one of our composting sites of campus...
By implementing a campus-wide composting program, Dining Services has been able to divert over 85% of our waste from landfills!
