Those iPads are there to replace all of the countless manuals. They're not playing around on the internet or games. They're strictly there for manuals, now with that said it is still an electronic device..but it's not like they're using the iPad every minute of the flight. My dad is an AA Captain who's been flying planes for 40 years now, and he has an iPad.

However, it is against federal aviation law to use a device on a passenger aircraft that is transmitting any signal. Failure to comply with said law can result in removal from the flight, and/or legal action against anyone who does not comply. FAR/AIM regulation §91.21 states that no person nor any pilot may operate an electronic device on an aircraft operated by a carrier (i.e airline) or an aircraft operating under IFR (instrument guided flight) which, notably, all airline flights are both.
