This is the first video of a series of my blind dog Chispa.
When I after 5 months returned from Mozambique to Sweden in April 2008 my dog Chispa had become blind and apathetic. Because she has a damaged right shoulder since birth she has always been limping. During my absence she had gained weight something which aggravated her growing joint problems.
I went with her to the Vet and thought I should take her away. But he, a man in his 70s, told me that you have had many dogs and a blind dog can have a good life.
So I put Chispa on a diet, not enough yet, and started to work with her.
If I a year ago had said "let us go out" she would become very happy.
Now, when I had come back she hardly moved. Two months later she is very happy to go out and is enjoying life again.
So the idea of these videos is, apart from my own memories, to share my expriences.
When I walk in the forests on a path she is often in front of me - probably smelling the path. At times she does not apear to be blind but she is.
Sometimes she even gets lost in my appartment and would land in a corner.
So eventually, with the help of Patric, I hope to make a small documentary.

  • It was a really touching video. In a world which is full of violence and treachery,it is good to see people with compassion have not become extinct. I hope people like G.W Bush will watch this video,

  • There are more videos with Chispa and I working together.

  • I own a blind shih tzu, she is moslty okay and even happy but she does get depressed and goes to her bed and will stay in bed for days, I have such guilt and have thought about putting her down, but then she rebounds and has a joy of life and then I am glad I did not kill her her, I love her and do not want her to suffer. I will try to dind more of your videos for help.

  • Your story moved me. Look at my other videos about Chispa. I will be around for practical advice. Tom

  • I have had dogs since my youth. You have to work with her.

  • Amazing video, thank you for posting it. It's important for people to see that dogs don't think of themselves as handicapped or hopeless. I have a 3 legged dog, and helped a blind dog get a home thru rescue (see my videos for Gavin the blind dog).

Good luck to you! Thank you also for giving him all these happy times wandering the forest, rolling in grass, and playing in the lake, that he might have missed if he was put to sleep.

  • Thanks for your comments!

I had a look at some of the videos of Gavin. Very nice.

The beauty of dog-human relationship is that it is reciprocal. But we have to understand that dogs are not human beings - we have a responsibility of being a pack leader.

There are several more videos with Chispa (female Malinois), covering different topics like climbing stairs, stimulating the dog...

Obediance, she shivers with joy when we do that. - I hope to make a small video of that as well.

    Tom

  • Uhm. People, it's not about a child. It's a fucking dog. I would bet half of my fortune that it doesn't give a rat's ass as long as he eats and fucks. He might be a bit annoyed when he falls from the stairs every now and then but still, unconsciousness=badassery. I also bet this animal could survive in the wild, judging by what i've seen on the video.

Still, you people are just a bit excessive. You can't talk about depression on an animal that can't understand why the lights have turned off.

  • I have a blind dog as well, Jester, and he is 14 but enjoys life to the fullest

  • Tom, my 6yrold Red Heeler is on the cusp of total blindness from PRA. I was so depressed and worried; though my dog loving friends all said that she would be fine, which she is. With darkness coming so quickly now in November, I fretted that I'd be home too late to play with her-when I realized that it didn't matter! We can play fetch & frisbee 24/7! This is helpful to point out to people depressed by the oncoming blindness of their beloved dogs.

Chispa is as beautiful as your kindness. Maus564
