This extract from the 1964 short 'South Bank' offers a tantalising glimpse inside the National Film Theatre over four decades before its reinvention as BFI Southbank. Film-goers emerge from the latest Godard offering and Jeanne Moreau gazes down from the poster board: a nice touch of continuity in an area of London that has continued to evolve well into the 21st century. (Simon McCallum)

Just my thoughts - when men knew how to dress and you could still smoke in public.

  • Wow people were a lot older then!

  • fascinating looking at the differences between then and now. from the images here, back in 1964 the nft looked like a temple to european art cinema. now the bfi seems to be all about the latest films at the imax and is almost apologetic about 'quality' cinema.

  • Better surveillance cameras back then in 1964 huh!

She really looks like an italian actress, Lea Massari. Is it she?

  • The days when gentlemen wore suits to the cinema and smoked un-filtered cigarettes!
