For wireless flash compatibility chart • D3000 - External Unit • D5000 - External Unit • D40 - External Unit • D40X - External Unit • D50 - External Unit • D60 - External Unit • D70 - Built-In Flash • D70s - Built-In Flash • D80 - Built-In Flash • D90 - Built-In Flash • D100 - Incompatible • D200 - Built-In Flash • D300 - Built-In Flash • D700 - Built-In Flash • D1-Series - Incompatible • D2-Series - External Unit • D3-Series - External Unit
For camera models that require external unit to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly requires SB-800 in Master Mode, SB-900 in Master Mode, or SU-800 Commander. Due to lack of SU-4 Mode on the SB-600, it cannot be triggered with any other flash units besides the two listed above. Also, due to lack of external PC terminal, it cannot connect to Pocketwizards MultiMAX and / or Plus / Plus II.
Camera models with built-in flash are capable of firing the SB-600 wirelessly. If one wish to prevent the onboard flash from reaching the subject, buy a $7 Nikon SG-3IR Panel and slide it into the flash hot shoe.

Can I set up the sb-600 to firing of camera, using the built-in flash on Nikon D3000? See that you say "• D3000 - External Unit" and "Camera models with built-in flash are capable of firing the SB-600 wirelessly." I`m thinking of bying the sb-600, but trying to find out what I need for "off camera" fiering, or if should just go for the sb-900.
No, you need an external unit to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly (using another SB-800, SB-900, or SU-800 Commander). The D3000 does not have Commander Mode (where you can use the built-in flash to trigger CLS enabled speedlights), plus, the SB-600 does not have SU-4 (as known as "optical slave" where it fires once D3000's flash goes off.
In the simpler terms, no, it can not fire wirelessly unless you buy an external unit or choose a different option.
I bought an sb 600 and it doesn't flash, it just clicks when I press flash. And when i try to shoot with it, it blink --3.00 underexposure. So I have to return it tomorrow :(
Try these: Test using fresh Duracell Coppertop AA Alkalines, do a master reset, make sure you have 0.0EV set on the SB-600 AND the camera, double check the exposure on the camera (SS, ƒ/stop, and ISO), make sure there is no filter or lens cap attached accidentally, fire the flash in M (manual) mode, etc. etc. before returning it. At least read your SB-600 user's manual first to confirm.
I accidentally dropped my SB-600 and purchased an OEM flash tube but can't figure out how to get to it! I'm afraid Im going to break some of the components. Any ideas?
Oh, hah, I thought you're referring a flash diffuser.
Sorry, no, it cannot be done at home, it needs to be sent off to Nikon to have it repaired. If you do this at home, it will violate Nikon's warranty; it is the best to leave this to the professionals.

Just bought me a Nikon SB-600 after seeing this demostration. Can't wait until I get it and playing with that CLS (Creative Lightning System)!
Hurray!
