Well, you're right, but the reason there's so much crap on the app store is because it's so easy to do. Programming on the iPhone (for a programmer) is a no-brainer, and if your app is decent and doesn't break any of Apple's rules, it gets on easily, so basically, it's cheap and easy to make apps for the iPhone, which is the reason there are so many apps available.
