..one of his musicians stated he was great....a short tubby man, .and anti social and a sadistic boss.....in fact he refused to be part of the Chicago scene...he retained his home in Connecticut all those years he was a Chicago conductor, and left Chicago when the season ended, each year...
Reiner and his men were one of the wonders of the world; it is wonderful to have this clip, as there is not nearly enough Reiner on YouTube. I wish someone would upload his memorable Richard Strauss, especially DON QUIXOTE and the 1954 DON JUAN. Fortunately we have his PINES OF ROME.
I think Reiner was great in modern and romantic repertoire, a bit stiff, wooden and joyless in Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven..

Reiner - one of my favorites. He reminds me a little of Bela Lugosi. In a good way.
His Scheherazade is immortal and he was a great opera conductor.
