I doubt her expression comes from drug use. I say this for two reasons: one, this was a pre-Fosse polished version and, two, the original Cabaret had a Sally Bowles (Judy Dench) that was not supposed to be a perfect singer in the first place. Combine that with an always excited and expressive Liza and you get what we see here. And, personally, I think it's grand.

She is like her mother, if you watch her mother on film when she was around 13, she was very jazzy then moved as a young adult to more mainstream musical. this clip shows the same in Liza, more jazzy before turning to a more polished musical. the same is seen in barbra streisand, its like they were more wild and carefree prior to being groomed and mature.

the back beating really annoyed me haha xx

Liza was addicted when she was younger, maybe already at this stage, although unlike her mother when she was confronted she sought professional help and is clean/sober today

Awful performance, Miss Liza!

Over the top, but she was in France. I always thought she was a better actress than singer, a little carried away here. Kaye Ballard wrote how she befriended Ebb early and hired him for her cabaret material, and that he wrote this song for her based on a flip comment she made. When he gave it to Liza later, ended their relationship for a long spell.

1967 - you guys think she's on something?? Geez - talk about seeing what you want to see. This is Broadway Liza - so this is all she knows before her technique matured. Geez. Grab a shovel, dig for garbage, and eventually you'll find it. Huh.

She no Judy, that's for sure.

We 'knew' Fred Ebb - in the Biblical sense.
@STUPIDxxSITE I don't think this is Druggie-Liza.I think this is Theatrical-Liza. This is 2 years after Flora & the Red Menace. If you can find a live recording (not the studio cast record) from that show you will hear a very expressive, not-in-perfect-voice Liza. 1) She is very young in her voice here. And 2), being a Broadway star involves sometimes exaggerated motions & strong projection of voice.Currently on YouTube there is a live recording of Sing Happy--much rougher than cast record.

Well, I think by the time they made the movie her voice deepened naturally from all of the singing she had to do over the course of five years, but it is pretty hysterical. I don`t mean this as an insut to her by asking, but do you think she was on something? My step-brother was sort of like that when he sang while on something...
I`m going to get a few thumbs down for this, aren`t I?
