Test of the zoom function on the Sony SR45. I believe that the zoom function does not amplify the object the camera is focused on but rather just more sensitive, or amplified in general.
Your other option would be to use your own audio capturing device such as a parabolic microphone or shotgun mic, and record independently and just overlay the audio on top of the video. More work but great sound. Hope that helps.
Would you reccomend this type of microphone for filming steam engines coming towards you, and you want to pick up as much sound from them as possible?
Smerlinare, No I wouldn't. The zoom microphone function is not that at all, it is just increases the amplification when you zoom. Which would help in your situation but probably not capture what you are looking for. Is what your looking for professional grade or just home owner? The reason I ask is because if you want to capture good sound, buy a camcorder that has a built in external microphone such as a shotgun mic.
