  • The methods shown are well proven, as is the boom brake. Booms snapping are rare, except in extreme weather, or on boats being over-pressed (i.e. offshore races). This condition--called "tripping" --happens when the boat rolls, digs her boom end underwater, and then bends or snaps the boom . Sailmakers sometimes install the mainsail clew reefing cringle just a bit higher than the tack reefing cringle to help prevent tripping.

  • Hi,

Keep some slack in the preventer to prevent boom distortion. In extreme weather, tie a strop of heavy shock chord to the deck fitting and then attach the preventer to that. This helps keep high loads off the boom.

As as side note: veteran circumnavigator Hal Roth rigged dual preventers set port and starboard and kept them in place throughout his voyages. He could run on either tack without having to re-rig to the opposite side. Or leave the cockpit!

  • Quickest way to snap a boom in half. use a boombrake.

  • great video, I never even thought about this.

  • I'm assuming this isn't running rigging in the sense that it is always attached. How easy and safe is it to run and use?
