This video is based on the A&E/LWT miniseries of Thomas Hardy's "Tess Of The D'Urbervilles" - specifically, the tragic love between Tess (Justine Waddell) and Angel (Oliver Milburn). I have to say that the onscreen chemistry between these two actors is one of the main reasons why this is my favorite version of Hardy's novel (although I do own and love the 1979 and 2008 adaptations). This was the only time that I've ever been invested in Tess and Angel's relationship - and Oliver Milburn has got to be the best Angel I've ever seen, despite the character's hypocrisy. Milburn was born in Dorset, and his kind eyes and gentle expressions made it hard to resent him, and I could see why Tess loved him and longed for him to return to her. Milburn also conveyed that Angel anguished and agonized over his mistakes, and that his foolish decisions drove Tess to an unspeakable act. The romantic chemistry was there from the get-go and I was heartbroken at the finale - I so wanted them to end up together somehow. Justine Waddell was a magnificent Tess (and all three actresses who played the role put their own unique stamp on the role), and I could picture her as country girl of that time. In short, they seemed like a couple to me, and it seemed very real. I used Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" because I think it sums up Tess's love for Angel. Hope you like it!

Strange how I prefer Tess with Angel in this version while loving Tess with Alec in another. :)

  • You're not the only one - I love Tess and Angel in this version but prefer Tess and Alec in the 2008 BBC miniseries.
