Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger... There are many games and series falling under the RPG label, and indeed their music is mood-setting and epic. But there are many RPGs that never fall under the spotlight, and indeed, many of these have wonderful tunes as well.

This video exists to showcase just a small sampling of battle themes from multiple obscure RPGs, spanning multiple systems. Most of the games contained within are coincidentally Japanese-only, though I discovered independently-made English patches for each of these; obviously, the games were considered worth the effort of translation.

Here's each game, in order of appearance.

Chaos World - Famicom
Princess Maker 2 - DOS
Paladin's Quest - SNES
Cyber Knight II - Super Famicom
Tales of Phantasia - Playstation

Regional Information: Chaos World, Princess Maker 2, Cyber Knight II, and Tales of Phantasia are Japanese games which I found patches for; only Paladin's Quest was released in English as well as Japanese. Tales of Phantasia has been released for the SNES and GBA in English, but the PSX version which I showcase here was never released outside of Japan.

I apologize for quality issues in the video samples for some games; I do not have the greatest computer, and recording video for Tales of Phantasia was particularly hard considering the strain that running a PSX game put on my computer. Still, the music should be recorded in perfect quality, and that's what's important! :P

Hope you guys like my intro video, as I put a lot of effort into it! Yes, I'm operating under the 'Firetail Studios' name now...this will be my copyright from here on out.

Enjoy the video! Comments and subs appreciated!

  • If you ever make another of these, you should include some of the boss themes from Brandish. Obscure RPG, great music... it totally fits the criteria! That game needs more love... and an English release of the PSP remake.

  • @skyrunner14 Well, maybe I will do another one sometime. :3 I'm happy that this video is finally getting some attention...my vids don't tend to get many views. I'll check out Brandish soon.

  • Great list: all of these themes are great and the games themselves were solid but overlooked.

Though I wonder how obscure Paladin’s Quest really was? It was released by Enix in 1993 along side E.VO, The 7th Saga and ActRaiser2, none of which were stellar and had a few write ups in Nintendo Power.

I believe 1993 is when Square put out Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, so perhaps that’s why it wasn’t as popular.

Funny: remember when Square put out a few awesome titles per year?

  • @catboydale Agreed! Arcana was easily a lesser known title but had some of the best music of any SNES RPG. All five stages (especially Castle Bintel) had great themes.

  • Thanks for these great tunes =D

  • @catboydale

    dude

    arcana's boss theme was /awesome/

glad to see someone else who played it! :D

  • I always thought the battle theme and Boss them from Arcana (SNES) was really cool, and it's obscure, so I think it fits your criteria.

  • @lockhart1433 To be honest, I always mix up the two names.

  • @ZenoKage originally called dragon warrior but yes
