At the 3:00 mark, he mentions they've tried PPC on Facebook. I picked up this comment while on the panel, but I was trying to hard not to veer off the "search" topic too far. But placing PPC ads on a social media platform is 100% different than social media! That is paid advertising, that happens to be on a social site - but it's far from social, so correlating its results to the effectiveness of social just shows me that the full understanding of social is not there.

Social media is a fundamental shift in how consumers interact with one another & make purchasing decisions. If affects EVERY brand & product out there, regardless of budget. To say that it's only a viable tactic for the "prom king" brands is, IMO, doing a disservice to your clients. Can every brand afford to launch a custom video onslaught like Old Spice? No, of course not. But conversations are happening about your brand w/ or w/o you. What brands can afford to sit those convos out?

@dholl99 Needless to say, we're on your side on this... Conversations are happening and if your brand chooses to ignore them, that's fine. But it does not require gobs of money to get into the conversation even if it's simply to provide a little customer service. Marketers need to be better educated and help build strategies around how their customers want to interact with them, not how the other way around.
