WHEN THE BRAIN CANT HEAR: Unraveling the Mystery of Auditory Processing Disorder (PB Press; February 12, 2002; $25.00) by Teri James Bellis, Ph.D., is the first book written especially for the layperson about this widespread but little known disorder, which crosses all gender, age, ethnic, and socioeconomic boundaries. The aural equivalent of dyslexia, APD is primarily an input problem that affects the way an individual processes auditory information, especially speech, jumbling words or distorting the meaning of what is said. Dr. Bellis is regarded as one of the worlds foremost experts on this disorder, draws on years of research as well as her own personal experience as a victim of adult-onset APD for this definitive sourcebook that delineates its symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment in both children and adults.

  • thank you for sharing. I have apd too. It was a huge problem in my relationship with my ex. We were together for 3 1/2 years. I tried very hard to explain to him what it feels like but we always fought because I had a hard time understanding what he wanted from me. He would say I never listen, and told me to try harder.. I'm glad to see someone explaining it on youtube. Its very frustrating to have apd lol.

  • I have auditory processing disorder too. Thanks for the signing this, it's really hard for me to understand youtube videos if someone's just talking.

it's hard being "deaf" but not being deaf, my hearing is fine, no deaf accent, i sing very well, i just can't process speech! and hearing aids won't help with that. the hardest part is that people don't understand how you really can't hear them but you don't sound deaf or don't look deaf.

  • your right im not deaf im (HOH) MY IS WORD DEAFES LOT MISS LOT I DO SIGN form deaf c ulutre them slef i ( LOVE TO SIGN BETTER ).. im HOH /DEAF THANK U

  • I have that, too. It's very difficult to live with. People can't understand why I can hear tones but have an awful time with speech.

  • @nonew3 i DO know what you mean ...wow that real too... they don't understand it because they don't have it that why?

  • i know asl sign langauge since i was 13 smile that im (HOIH)

  • yes, it's the same for me. i have CAPD but most people don't know what that is, so it's easier to say I'm HOH. i don't sound deaf, and i don't look deaf, but i don't understand people say to me.

  • that becaues i not full deaf im (HOH) some deaf i say deaf i learn from deaf them self i have pried! deaf .

  • Yeah. I get accused a lot of faking it, of being "psychiatric" or "mental," and of being rude and ignoring people, by people who don't understand and who refuse to get educated on it.
