Warning: Disney Princess fans beware! I love Disney as much as the next person... I criticize their Princess trend in this video because I love Disney's work and want them to be as good as possible and think about the messages their are putting into their films. Part 3 focuses on messages in media. This is the third video for the online course CMT 170 History of Film at New Mexico State University-Grants. Doug Bocaz-Larson is the instructor of the course (he is the program manager of the Creative Media program in Grants). You can visit http://grants.nmsu.edu or http://www.nmsu.edu/course to find out how to register for the course which begins January 14, 2009. The cost is only $150 for the 3 credit course. The text is "Film" by Ronald Bergen from DK.com or can be found at Amazon.com (ISBN 978-0-7566-2203-9). This video was created for non-profit, educational purposes and follows Fair Use guidelines. • I think that yes, people are often influenced by media nowadays although it can't be held completely responsible for how a person turns out or acts. That's just removing responsibilty from a person completely.

Oddly enough I've never been a big fan of Disney's princesses; I was always more into video games such as Super Mario, Sonic, etc. But when I did watch Disney films I generally liked characters such as the Beast and Mushu as odd as that sounds.

  • The Beast and Mushu are awesome characters... they are complicated and have layers to them. Layers and conflict make them interesting. Characters who lack internal conflict are much less appealing I think.

  • As far as the discussion on Disney Princesses...I used to be a huge fan of cinderella as a child mainly because of the fairy tale & Prince charming part of the story. Now I still am a fan because of the moral of the story, she works her tail off for three people that have no such respect for her and in the process she still maintains her spirit and is still courteous and respectful to them. That shows a lot of class. The other Princesses in my opinion had it a little easier.

  • What about Beauty in Beauty and the Beast and Mulan? They didn't have it too easy either :)

  • I do feel like it is very important to teach media studies to children in school. Kids need to learn (even at young ages) about what to expect from the media, movies, documentaries and the local news. I agree with Kataluna3 about media studies being just as important for parents and teachers so that they are educated on the kinds of things that are available out their for their kids to see.

  • We really are influenced and it might help us if we were more aware of it.

  • I agree with the information on this video i dont think most people relize the effects of tv and how far we have come in this day and age. I have noticed the differance of the characters on Disney and even television and the movies. I belive the images we see also effect the way we tend to present ourselves

  • Here's another way to look at it... Disney creates too much pressure on guys to create the perfect romance for women. How can we live up to Prince Charming or any of those other guys? Shrek is a great twist on this though. He only wants to loved for who he is.

  • I just worry that they teach women to dream of only love and not of their own goals beyond a man. The first Mulan breaks the mold but the second tries to undo the progress.

  • I am a child of the 90's, and I remember all of the Disney movies... When I was a kid I liked those movies... not too much but they were okay. I wasn't ever influenced by the princess' though. I had only brothers, lol so if I was into them, I would have been made fun of. So I was more into Super Mario and stuff. And my influence was my mom more than anything. I don't really think girls are influenced by Disney movies. I'm sure, 7/10 times I'd say they do grow out of it.... But thats my opinion.

  • I feel that the image of the princess is a reflection of what society has been engrained with: That a lady seek a man and man seek for a lady. They do show that a lady should be the nurturer of the family and the man take on the provider role. I like that theme, but let us get real, not everyone has a prefect family, and these more modern films help the young women to build more backbone and independence from male rule. If you want to cross dress to save the lives of thousands its ok.
