Can he play or what!! I've noticed that he has fewer negative comments than any other drummer on you-tube. Those of us who "get" Elvin know that his playing transcends technique and has the ability to purify our souls. Thankyou Elvin

The music always comes before the notation!
(Although reading music does speed things up considerably...)

what are you talking about... elvin did drum corps, and he knew the shit out of the harmony and the melody.

I love the fluidity of his solos...it's like a wave breaking and receding...I guess he achieves that with broken triplets. (Sorry for that hippy-ish analogy, by the way.)
He is seriously pissed at the floor tom around 2:14!

This guy never took a drum lesson and couldn't read drum charts - something to think about for those who over-intellectualize music or attempt to subject it to strict academic analysis.

reading music is a tool, not a diploma.I find it very very usefull. With time so will you, I guess.

To be sure, reading music is a very useful tool. Without understanding at least some theory, music is impossible to navigate. No one is disputing that fact. However, composing and performing beautiful music has everything to do with feeling and intuition, even if it means deviating from the beaten path. A natural musician can be distinguished from a technical, robotic or automated one fairly easily; after all, music was performed from feeling and memory long before it was ever transcribed.
