@sjm39 It isn't bad for javelin; in fact it makes more sense for javelin (and hammer) than it does for discus or shot put. The problem is people try to muscle the lift instead of use it for the speed benefits. This video displays just that; he's very strong but doesn't move the weight very quickly. Speed is probably an issue for his throwing, too.
@sjm39 It's not an overrated lift. There was research done that this is one of the most useful lifts in proportion to javelin distance; however, this is the lift that is the most quickly diminished in terms of javelin distance. It helps your distances a ton, but stops helping it very quickly. This trains for strength and speed; Bobby Smith is strong, not fast.
its an overrated exercise in which people think yields an effect. If Bobbys 270 snatch is so useful then why is he still struggling to throw 75 plus meters. Andreas Thorkildsen has given that up years ago, yet he still throws 90 every year. He does push jerks, bench press, squats, medball work and he throws and throws and throws. His throwing specific strength goes right into the javelin. USA needs to stop training the rest of the throws like the shot put.
@ajwazhere Yes useless. Think about what you said. Throwing yourself under the bar to achieve explosion? Bobby doesnt even achieve triple extension here making it difficult to recruit explosion. You get the same overall effect from sprinting, throwing a med ball, and jumping as many ways as you can. Catching a bar doesnt achieve explosion. Your absolute strength has to increase for your explosion to increase. Olympic lifting is not a means to get explosive.....
@sjm39 Useless lift? You realize this is probably the most important lift for Javelin throwers. It helps generate incredible explosive power since you have to throw yourself under the bar so quickly
probably because it takes a toll on your body and is a useless lift. As you can see in his videos he does alot of running, jumping, bounding, and of coarse throwing.
Andreas has had problems with his back and he is desided with his coach that there is no use doing snatch any more. It's too dangerous and good enough already. Åsmund Martinsen (Andreas' coach) said that improving snatch result won't do any differense in javelin result. Throwing technique is main thing nowadays.

Not sure if you guys noticed, but I'm amazed his arms didn't fall out of his sockets. Check out :3 (haha, lionface)
That arm angle is sure to do some damage with 270 lbs.
That being said, awesome lift!

Tero's PR in snatch is 120kg. Andreas has done more than that but doesn't do snatch anymore.
