This episode from the 1977 series covers John Noakes preparation and participation in "The Liffey Descent" - a tortuous canoe marathon that takes place in Southern Ireland each year.

The Jameson Liffey Descent takes in just under 18 miles of what must be the finest long distance canoe racing course in the world -- with ten weirs, two stretches of rapids, a punishing portage and the daunting "jungle" to contend with. To add to the occasion the Electricity Board releases 30 million tons of water through their hydro stations to ensure a massive flood for the event.

In preparation John Noakes joins a group of teenagers in the UK for some basic canoeing groundwork training before moving on to learn the more advanced skills of negotiating weirs and staying upright in turbulant water.

Off to Ireland and a look at the course before the hydro electric dam is opened and the millions of gallons of water released that turn the placid river into a raging torrent.

We follow John and his team mate through all the thrills and spills of the race and eventual conclusion.

  • say hat you like but this is from an era when has kids we learnt to enjoy the outdoors and to use our imagination,tv in those days so much better especially that aimed at the younger audience.Totally absorbing even now and shows what the kids of today are missing, kept out of harms way through fears of crime etc...total shame and one that is stopping kids developing into healthy fit adults with a sense of adventure.

  • Great channel, thanks for putting full episodes up...very good nostalgia trip for me with so many different titles, many of which I had not remembered but vaguely recall the more I think about them, great theme tunes some of them have too...thank you, sire.
