A hiker is missing after her brother survives an avalanche in a remote area of Alamosa County known as the Hour Glass, between Little Bear and Blanca Pass. The brother was able to hike out Friday morning and was taken to the hospital after making a call for help on his cell phone. Both hikers were dressed for the extreme weather conditions, but neither had an avalanche beacon. The two hikers are described as young adults, and both work at Emergency Medical Technicians.
The brother and sister who were reportedly engulfed in an avalanche Thursday are from Loveland. Nick and Lygon Stevens were hiking the southwest face of Blanca Peak, in the Sangre de Cristo Range in southern Colorado, when the avalanche struck. Video by Jeffrey Keim.
