Archival footage of Marshall's game at East Carolina in 1970. The plane carrying the Herd home from its game at ECU crashed near Tri-State Airport, killing all 75 aboard. The victims included 37 MU football players, five coaches, seven staff members, 21 community supporters and five crew of the DC-9 jetliner. This particular footage shows Marshall's last drive to get into tying FG range. It begins with a controversial intentional grounding call with 30 seconds left that moved MU out of FG range.

  • I read that another factor in the crash was that the airport had a Landing Tracking system (ILS, I think?) it wasn't using that night.

  • speaking from the knight nation, god bless the herd from the 70s and much respect to marshall for having the strength to bounce back from such a horrible tragedy. much respect for my school opponents last weekend.

  • I'm guessing Marshall was in white?

  • @Commandert1TV

    I am ever so sorry......

  • I just watched the movie about this team and R.I.P too the 1970's Marshall Thundering Herd

  • @Commandert1TV sorry for ur lost.

  • @Commandert1TV it was because they were Freshman which back then they wouldn't allow Freshman to play. And there were Hurt players that didn't go on.

  • @piratesmvp there parents wouldn't let them go so they stayed back there were no survivors my uncle Joe died on this crash #33

  • Did the three surviving football players play for the new team?

  • soprisrb first they were mostly all kids.. except for the coaches and boosters and second.. what a callous comment.

God Bless the survivors... that would be the families, the university and the town..

November 14th is my birthday and I remember all too well the events of that day. I'm a Bama fan first.. but for the last 40 years I have followed Marshall as well... and am proud of the progress they have made...
