Kenneth Scott Blake II killed my sister Laura on Halloween night in 2009. He drove 3x the legal limit and down the wrong side of a highway about a mile where I grew up and where 16-year-old Laura lived. He collided with a car in which Laura was riding. Witnesses at the scene said he was beligerent, attempting to restart his car.
Blake was scheduled to plead guilty in March 2011. The judge assigned to the case, Michael Manners, recused himself literally in the last business hour before court. It turns out he was partners with Blake's defense. Finally, in August 2011, the district presiding judge Charles Atwell accepted Blake's guilty plea.
The prosecution recommended a 25 year consecutive sentence. The judge suspended Blake's manslaughter sentence, the only charge with any teeth, and gave him 6 years for assault on my sister's two friends who survived.
This did two important things: It allowed Blake immediate eligibility for parole and it removed Laura's family's ability to attend Blake's parole hearings. It's as if Laura was never even alive from a sentencing perspective. However, the other two girls he injured and their families can go to his parole hearings, as they should. The prosecutor and victim's advocate, the only people who we've been able to trust throughout this ordeal, are great people and will be driving to St. Joseph, MO to speak at the hearing.
We sent this video as a DVD to the Missouri Department of Corrections for Kenneth Scott Blake II's first parole hearing scheduled on 11/10/2011. Hopefully someone sane there will keep him in another year. Otherwise he will have simply served 2 years in county jail for killing a teenage girl.
