I think this symphony is so much finer, in every way, than the embarrassingly, tediously banal 7th, which, because of it's nickname, and consequent associations is lauded as one of Shostakovich's finest achievements. This symphony covers the usual Shosty territory that we all love, but with greater economy and originality.

I always felt that the first movement might be his finest music! Thanks for the post. That piccolo solo in the first movement is a bitch, isn't it?
