We won't even begin to make steps toward sending humans to Mars until we have someone in the executive office who is willing to give NASA the necessary funding. And giving 4 billion dollars to private business, as proposed by the current administration, in hopes they will work toward this goal is basically throwing money down a bottomless pit.
The only feul they'll need is enough to get away from Mars' gravity. Once they're in space, they can keep going in constant straight-line motion until acted upon by an outside force.
Theris you mean the atmosphere is lighter than earths right. I thought in chemistry it's all proportional. If the air is lighter you compress it. If it's colder than optimum you heat it. If the concentrations are wrong you dilute or concentrate. If you can't fix the concentration and the desired rate of reaction is not attainable the you cycle the reactants thru the reactor for a longer period of time. Getting it to work after changing the parameters is a straight foward engineering problem.
