This is the full Action News Theme used until 1994. I could not find a good quality video however so used a promo tag during a 1984 showing of 'The Wizard of Oz'
KSTP in Minneapolis-St. Paul used this theme from circa '71 to 82, still the best news music ever! This is the most complete version I've found so far. But there is more- at least in the Twin Cities they used a different part Mr. Seller's theme at the end of the newscast, finishing with the same fanfare as the end of this posted version.
@fdnyemt5330@schs1977 WOWK hasn't used this for a good 20 years. They've been using the Stephen Arnold "Finale" package since 2003, like all the other West Virginia Media Holdings stations. Great way to make a mid-market station sound like market 195.
I remember Greg Catlin doing a fictional news story from the Action News desk in the movie "War Games" (I think it was War Games...) and thumbs up for Bob Buchana reporting the weather HAMMERED DRUNK!
@fdnyemt5330 - I don't believe they use it any longer. I am originally from Charleston, WV but have been living in Perth, Australia for the last 5 years and I have not been home since then.
I reside near Pottstown, PA , the hometown of Hall and Oates. Daryl Hall is an occasional customer of a friends business, and they are on good terms. I will have my friend make an inquiry as to Tom Sellers' involvement, if any. A post will follow upon my receiving a reply.
In addition, during the late, legendary L.A. news anchor George Putnam's run at KTLA Channel 5 in the early to mid-1970's, the original "Action News Theme" recording was used as the theme to what was called "The George Putnam News."
@capsgm2002 - Also, prior to this station become WBNG, it was WNBF-TV, and owned by the same company (Triangle) that owned WFIL-TV (now WPVI-TV). I presume this "Action News" theme was also used at the outset by then-fellow Triangle station, WNHC-TV (now WTNH-TV) in New Haven, CT.
Oh, yes, this is indeed the "Action News Theme" penned by Tom Sellers. This appears to be a later recording, based on:
Adding on the research, Hall and Oates were both at Temple, and Oates was there when the theme was commissioned. Who knew that Hall and Oates would be linked to this theme?
