Why train uphill then? Surely thats spending extra energy on parts of the muscle he will not use in a race on flat. Not to mention times would be different. Was he just a genetic freak that could do anything and win in that era? Do todays top runners train up hills when they are to run on a track?
@blaharns You're right, except Kipketer in the late 90's. I still think Coe could have gone sub 1:41.0 if he'd not been ill in 82 & 83. I think the British took him for granted, considering that only now, 30 years later, are there 2 guys (Rudisha & Kaki) approaching his times on faster mondo tracks. Those 6 x 800 sessions were brutal. I've read elsewhere that athletes since Coe have tried replicating his training sessions, only to break down unable to sustain it for more than a few weeks.
6 x 800m in 1:50-1:55 with 90 secs rest between reps! I can't begin to imagine what that must feel like. I wonder how many 800 guys in the UK are doing a similar session today?

If coe doesn't run them fast enough, he will get run over!

My PR is 1:51.21. I cannot IMAGINE doing that in an interval session!
