This video is a hands-on review of Nikon's famous 'poor man's' prime lens of Nikon 50mm ƒ/1.8D AF. The 50mm ƒ/1.8D AF will NOT focus automatically with these models of D40 / D40X / D60 / D3000 / D5000. Enjoy.

UPDATE (10/14/08): Many people are confused which 50mm prime to get: 50mm ƒ/1.4D AF / 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S or 50mm ƒ/1.8D AF - the reason why there are two variations is one is designed for low light performance and one is for using low apertures.

50mm ƒ/1.4D / 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S is ideal for low light photography where you will be using apertures from F/2.0 to F/4.0 for maximum image quality before the lens diffraction occurs on lower apertures beyond F/4.0.

50mm ƒ/1.8D AF is ideal for using low apertures where you need more depth of field when using F/4.0 to F/8.0 (DX, F/16.0 for FX). The larger apertures between F/1.8 and F/4.0 are useless due to chromatic aberration, which softens the image.

F/2.0 - F/4.0 = 50mm ƒ/1.4D AF / 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S
F/5.6-F/8.0 (DX, F/16.0 for FX) = 50mm ƒ/1.8D AF

  • "Poor Man's Prime Lens" as demonstrated here on this Nikon D3...

  • Yeah, so?

  • this works with d7000 right?

  • Mmhm.

  • One question. I am using D3100 with this lens and I know it can't automatically focus. But when I turn the focus ring and then get the focus correctly and halfly press the shutter button, there are no "beep" sound to indicate that the focus is correct.

Is it a normal situation for D3100? or My D3100 has some problems? Thanks.

  • Please refer to page 144 of your D3100 user's manual.

  • Some of my best pictures have come from this wonderfully cheap lens, i would recommend it to anybody using either a FX or DX body.

  • @51blue1 yEah it works.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Haha, nothings wrong with it, it's just that you call it a poor mans prime when the D3 isn't a ver "poor mans" camera. Great lens nonetheless.

  • using this lens on my d100.

    brilliant :)

  • @ganbalecheung There is no beep sound because you are on manual focus, which means you are allowed to take a photo even when it's out of focus. The beep sound is only heard when the camera has successfully autofocussed and is ready to take a photo, hence you only hear it when you are on autofocus mode. Hope this helps! (I have a D3100 myself)

  • @51blue1 Yes it works great with D7000

  • @51blue1

yes! I use it with D90 (before D7000) and it's ok!

  • @51blue1 sure
