Attack Ad No.2: Premier Greg Selinger, with his recognized huge involvement in bringing back the NHL Jets to Winnipeg; being photographed everywhere with popular Jets owner Mark Chipman, and being the beneficiary of a huge Canadian love in with Jack Layton and the federal NDP; i.e. a perfect storm by the timing of these historic events; as a result, won a 4th straight historic NDP victory in the October 4, 2011 Manitoba Provincial Election. In addition, Selinger's effective negative attack ads on Conservative leader Hugh McFadyen were hugely successful in demonizing McFadyen, with the NDP repetitive reminders of McFadyen's previous involvement with Conservative privatization of MTS raising phone costs immensely to Manitobans, bringing spectre to the fact that McFadyen would have privatized Hydro, raising Hydro costs to Manitobans in a big way. While McFadyen was a gentleman in refusing to respond in kind with effective viscious negative attack ads of his own, being a gentleman hardly ever wins elections in the hard hitting game of politics, which Selinger and the NDP eagerly embraced, in sneeringly mocking McFadyen for many months. And further, Selinger's best ally was the inept Liberal Liberal leader Dr. Jon Gerrard. In order for Mcfadyen to have been elected Premier, there would have had to have been a decent Liberal vote to drain off enough NDP support for the Conservatives to split the vote to win enough key ridings. Gerrard, unfortunately for McFadyen, was even more unpopular than the notorious former Prime Minister Kim Campbell, who won only 2 federal seats, and then resigned. Manitoba Conservatives in recent history have never been in government without a decent Liberal showing. Gerrard has only won about 1 or 2 ridings for about 12 years (3 terms), and has shamelessly resisted attempts to be replaced as leader in order for the Liberal party to prosper, much to McFadyen's chagrin.
