The musician Pauline Oliveros has developed a strategy she refers to as 'deep listening' which is a way of using sound as a source of meditation. Part of the structure of this concept of deep listening is a distinction between 'focal listening' and 'global listening' in which the former represents a centred, located sense, whilst the latter is a way of listening which is distributed across the aural environment and not specifically located within the intentionality of the listener. This distinction is drawn symbolically using the image of the circle with a dot in the centre.

  • Sound in relation to consciousness is my main vehicle for meditation. In relation to one of your last points in terms of extending ones consciousness beyond the "body", I found as a child I would often do just that, and it was easier as well. Sometimes I would move it further into my body as well; I distinctly recall moving "it" deeper into myself or shrinking it and everything took on a sense of hugeness and heaviness. Very nice post! Hope we can have discussions in the future

  • That's a fascinating description of your experience. I kind of know what you mean. Thanks for the comment.
