...swans, ducks, egrets etc...always nice to see them as the A train cuts through the bay wetlands. Don't mind the occasional crazy drugged up naked lady running up and down the subway car. Another kind of nature entirely.
Plenty of room to stretch out during Fall and Winter when Rockaway does'nt get invaded by Brooklynites and Queenites looking for summer sun, sand, and surf. (The beach looks like a war zone after the weekends sometimes. Pick up your own shit you know)
Bigger waves to and it's not that polluted. Plenty of wildlife. Jumping dolphins on occasion. Blue fish Bass runs for the surf casters...
Stay away. waves suck, it's too crowded, the water is cold and polluted, and if the rip doesn't sweep you away instantly, surely the sharks will get you. better off in brooklyn
Rockaway is far from the city, so it's not a place to live if you'll have to commute (unless you can offord the Long Island Railroad). But if you work in Queens, Brooklyn, or Long Island, it's a short car ride.
There are some perfectly good blocks where the Jews, Indians, and Russians have houses & apartments.
The problem is that huge row of housing projects. There used to be bungalows, but they were falling apart by the 1970's. The owner (all elderly) sold their land, where the housing blocks were built.
It's not far from the better areas. I used to ride my bike from Lawrence to the boardwalk and it would take less than half an hour.
It is indeed true. At times there's plenty of them but they are completely harmless and don't do anything. It depends on the times you go when you'll see them as well.

It'll never be a "hipster" area, thank heavens.
