I still find it very surprising that you don't have formal training.

It is less surprising in light of the fact that music and nuclear rockets (my profession)...are not the most related of fields. ;)
Additionally, however, I fear that if I did take training it would alter my composition style to be more rigidly conventional, not something I find desirable.
