This is footage of a Golden Ringed Dragonfly I saw laying eggs at the bank of the river itchen (near Southampton, UK) in June 2009.Incredibly, the insect's wings actualy brush the water surface each time she plunges her abdomen in to deposit an egg.

    The eggs are fertilised before this - when the dragonflies mate (you sometimes see them paired up - locked head to tail), then the female lays the fertilised eggs into shallow water or attached to the submerged stems of plants.
