These are our robot missions for the FLL 2008-2009 Climate Connections Challenge.

The programs have a maximum of 360 points within the 2:30 minutes allowed.

Our research project was a solution to save the Pacific Coho Salmon. Already an endangered species, the salmon are now on the verge of extinction due to the longer droughts brought on by climate change.

The increased droughts are further drying up the salmons spawning grounds in the Lagunitas Creek watershed in Marin County. The Lagunitas watershed is considered the best Coho salmon run in California.

  • im in the george webster team

  • Did you participate in the 2008-2009 challenge?

And if you did, how did your team do?

  • Awesome (simple) bot! You KISSed (Keep It Simple Stupid) and definately have a rockin' bot. Can I ask? How did it do at tournament? Will we see you at Nationals or Internationals???

  • Hello there!

Unfortunately we won't be going forward to Nationals or Internationals :(

We managed to squeak out a 230 at the state tournament, so we didn't do as well as we hoped - some human reasons, some robot.

We did try to keep it simple, and we were surprised how well it worked at the qualifying regional tournament (290).

We're hoping the really new teams will see that a simple robot can do a lot and maybe also figure out how to improve on what we had.

  • Yeah, tournament day has a way of making things fail... We were assigned a table with a giant knot on the inside table wall that grabbed our bot (which slides up the wall) for judging that almost took us out of the running...

Where are you from? We're in Washington State.

  • We're in Northern California, Silicon Valley area.

We were in the afternoon runs, and the mats got kind of dirty by the time we ran. It didn't help us, but that wasn't the only reason we didn't do as well as we liked.

I think the inside walls on one table was a little rougher than we would have liked, and that may have messed up that last part or our run.

  • Wow! My team and I did some of same things practically the same way. With the attachments and program. Sadly, my team scored 185 points as our highest. We should of done the 90° tactic... :P

    Great job in the end!

  • pretty good. we won 1 award (literaly). we won the best presentation award and our lead mentor, wendy sun won an award.

  • We registered as an official FIRST Lego League team for the 2008-2009 season. We then could buy the mat as part of the Field Setup Kit which also had all the Lego needed to build the task items.

They have new mats and challenges to buy every year. If you're just interested in trying your hand and a previous year's challenge, there may be some other teams that are willing to sell their old Field Setup Kit.

  • where do you get the mat for the robot.

  • I love our robot. Thanks. One of the team members emphasized the KISS policy and it really worked for us (lol) But i'm serious.
