Australian Women's Football has experienced an incredible rate of growth over the past decade, touching the sport at every level, from grassroots to the elite.

The surge in player numbers makes women's football one of the fastest growing sports in Australia, and indeed around the world. Most encouraging is the fact that juniors make up a large percentage of these new players. Certainly, for those aspiring to higher honours, these days there are very exciting opportunities that previously did not exist.

The catalyst for this change in the sport's development was women's football's acceptance as an Olympic sport, a decision announced in September 1993, three weeks before Sydney was named as host for the 2000 Olympic Games.

Subsequent government funding enabled women's football to rapidly build a much more professional structure, particularly at the elite level. Many firsts have been created, including the appointment of a full-time National Coach, and later an Assistant National Coach, the establishment of a national league, the formation of the Intensive Training Centre (ITC) program in the larger States, and a full-time centralised training program for our National Team - the Qantas Matildas - at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

Women's Football has come under Football Australia's wing and all endeavours will be made to continue the ever increasing interest amongst girls at a junior level.

With talent coming through and more Australians get a taste of professional football in America and Europe, Women's Football in this country is set for a big future in Australia.
