Internationally acclaimed director Kim Longinotto's PINK SARIS is an unflinching and often amusing look at the all-woman vigilante Gulabi Gang in Northern India and their charismatic leader, Sampat Pal, who acts as judge and jury for girls and women who are being abused by outlawed patriarchal traditions and the caste system.

"A girl's life is cruel...A woman's life is very cruel," notes Sampat Pal, the complex protagonist at the center of PINK SARIS, internationally acclaimed director Kim Longinotto's latest foray into the lives of extraordinary women (SISTERS IN LAW, DIVORCE IRANIAN STYLE, ROUGH AUNTIES). Sampat should know -- like many others she was married as a young girl into a family which made her work hard and beat her often. But unusually, she fought back, leaving her in-laws and eventually becoming famous as a champion for beleaguered women throughout Uttar Pradesh, many of whom find their way to her doorstep.

  • I hope her influence spreads like wild fire! There is rural India and there is urban India, and these 2 part are very different. One can shop for D&G and Versace & drive away from the city & reach a very very rural village which lacks basic amenities and were women are treated horribly in 20 minutes ... As an Indian male I am shocked to hear of these things as we have no idea what happens in the rural areas. That being said, there are men who torture their wives and daughters even in the city.

  • I just watched the whole programme on British TV and whilst it's amusing to see her scolding men, it's important to say that females are little better than chattles at the lower end of the social ladder. The notion of ''ountouchables'' is grotesque in the 21st century. It's institutionalized class bigotry which amounts practically to slavery. This is in an emerging global power which is ostensibly a democracy. Politicians can spout fine words whilst reality shows an ugly face to millions.

  • Where can you watch the rest of this?

  • I like this woman and I like her voice! SHABASH! It's about time women stood up to the lies and injustices that they face.

  • Excellent documentary. Bravo, I will use the doc. in my Ethics and Religious Cultures course. E.Vani

  • I never knew :(

  • great film. inspiring, giving hope as compared to other documentry films. One more outstanding point is, hardly anyone speaks to the camera, most scenes are taken from actual happening, which makes it like a feature film, very entertaining. बहुत बढ़िया। और अच्छी बात है कि यह सचमुच हिंदी में बनाई गई है। जहां अधिकतर भारतीय फिल्म निर्माता अंग्रेज़ी में बनाते हैं।

  • as an american so-called ''black'' (moor) i can relate, hell they look like some of my own family here

  • Awesome work!
