September 11, 2001 Channel Surfing

At about 5:00 PM Eastern Time on September 11, 2001, I pushed record on my VCR in an attempt to document just how many networks had suspended normal programming.

Two networks had to be cut out of this video to get it under 10 minutes - Speedvision (rebroadcasting Fox News) and CNN/SI (rebroadcasting CNN).

The guy on at 2:11 has some interesting takes. The idea of retaliation against any state sponsors of the attacks, and the removal of restrictions on assassinations. Sounds like he knew what he was talking about.

As you see at 5:20, ESPN simulcast ABC News coverage on this day, but they did not begin simulcasting right away. At 11:05 a.m. Eastern Time on September 11, 2001, The Worldwide Leader cut away from a rebroadcast of the previous night's SportsCenter to bring viewers the ABC News Special Report on the attacks. SportsCenter returned to the air that evening, though in a 30-minute format, to inform viewers on the cancellations of sporting events for the day.

~~Thanks for your presence of mind to do this. I was struck by how many that chose to suspend who didn't go to coverage just went dark instead. Two stood out for me that never acknowledged or changed programming and that was the Game Show Network and Cartoon network. Whether that was intentional or not I don't remember anybody talking about. My own guess over the years has been it gave some parent of kids still to young to comprehend something to look at. Otherwise I don't know.
