At about 5:00 PM Eastern Time on September 11, 2001, I pushed record on my VCR in an attempt to document just how many networks had suspended normal programming.

Two networks had to be cut out of this video to get it under 10 minutes - Speedvision (rebroadcasting Fox News) and CNN/SI (rebroadcasting CNN).

  • What was channel 52, right before TBN? I can make out "GTV" but Im unsure if it was a local public access channel or some sort of religious network.

  • GoodLife TV Network

  • What's that channel at 8:43? What is she talking about? Is the right screen of that channel the World Trade Center?

  • It's Trinity Broadcasting Network showing an image of the damage at The Pentagon.

  • Is This Comcast Cabe Company?

  • No, it's Charter

  • The guy on at 2:11 has some interesting takes. The idea of retaliation against any state sponsors of the attacks, and the removal of restrictions on assassinations. Sounds like he knew what he was talking about.

  • Ms Cleo 07:42

  • RIP TechTV.

  • the emergency broadcast system was never activated.

  • As you see at 5:20, ESPN simulcast ABC News coverage on this day, but they did not begin simulcasting right away. At 11:05 a.m. Eastern Time on September 11, 2001, The Worldwide Leader cut away from a rebroadcast of the previous night's SportsCenter to bring viewers the ABC News Special Report on the attacks. SportsCenter returned to the air that evening, though in a 30-minute format, to inform viewers on the cancellations of sporting events for the day.

  • @gamerboy49 Nickelodeon did not suspend programming; otherwise there would have been a mass lawsuit by lazy parents claiming that Dan Rather "emotionally scarred" their children.

  • @RetroVideoFan Virtually every network imaginable that a) was not a kids channel and b) had a sister or coalition network with a news department.

  • what is the song that starts at 8:50

  • ~~Thanks for your presence of mind to do this. I was struck by how many that chose to suspend who didn't go to coverage just went dark instead. Two stood out for me that never acknowledged or changed programming and that was the Game Show Network and Cartoon network. Whether that was intentional or not I don't remember anybody talking about. My own guess over the years has been it gave some parent of kids still to young to comprehend something to look at. Otherwise I don't know.

  • @LuigiGodzillaGirl you're pardoned. The answer is lotsaspaghetti.
