Only 10% of Comstock was explored. Many times to a depths less than 2,000 feet.
The 2,000 - 4,000 foot deep zone was entered by only a few historic shafts, that layer may be approx 98% unexplored.

Mining during 1859 - 1923 did not stop due to a lack of ore. Limits of technology powered by hand, animal, steam and early days combustion and electric motors eventually declined to a minimal profitability due to increased challenges at deeper levels with heat, hot ground water flooding, unstable rock - cave-ins and other conditions hindered further workings as can be found in webpages in the links above.

Modern technology has solutions for the problems too difficult or too expensive for Industrial Revolution technology.
