Street life meant something different back in the 70s when this song was written. Back then, there wasn't a concept of "thug life" and other hiphop iterations like there is now. We understood what the song meant, and that was parasitical nature of the streets: the poverty, drugs, violence, prostitution, hopelessness that drains the people living there. Realistically, not much has changed, but the image has been glamorized.
