The Whites enjoys caviar and the Chinese say nothing about it. The Chinese enjoys Shark's fin and the Whites make a big issue about it. Sturgeon is endangered too.

so is offshore drilling, cargo ships hitting whales, and crashed oil tankers. all theses things should stop now and immediately to save the poor sea creatures. obviously you cannot destroy these industries, many people's lively hood depend on them. all you can do is to keep these business regulated and minimize the damage done.

@Altarcraft The whites do actually have the right to complain about Shark's Fin... This goes against the rule of thumb for chefs... Do not waste ingredients... When they get the caviar, they still eat the fish they get it from.... Sharks aren't given that treatment.... It's just a cut and dump...

@Altarcraft Um, actually whites give whites a lot of shit about endangering the sturgeon. At the same time, there IS sustainable caviar as well... so the bitching is quieter as it only applies to PART of the market. Whereas shark fin is you know... basically as unsustainable as most any other form of fishery. Will note that most people find Shark Fin Tasteless, while caviar has a strong salt flavor. There's that too.

Consumption of sharks' fin is moderated by it's cost. That is the 'meat' of the issue with people complaining about it. A small bowl of sharks' fin is easily $100.00 US in today's market.

For the number of people that can afford to eat it, that doesn't even come close to the amount of meat paste westerners consume in homogenized meat products like hotdogs, salami, processed meat and, of course, in fast food hamburgers and chicken'nuggets'.

Totally agree with the comment about culture (don't care whose) not having the right to bring MANY species to the brink of extinction. I love Japanese cooking and sushi and was always pulling for Morimoto, he was my fave. Then he brought out the shark fin. What a DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
