The Schmale Laboratory at Virginia Tech has developed the next generation of autonomous (self-controlling) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect microorganisms in the atmosphere, hundreds of meters above the surface of the earth. We are applying cutting-edge genomics and bioinformatics tools to understand microbial life in the atmosphere. These UAVs can operate on their own without human intervention.
