Drop starting a chain saw applies to putting the chain saw in front of you and holding the top handle and attempting to pull start it without the chain saw being secure. You want to start a chain saw by putting your foot through the back hand grip where the throttle is and then pull start it. It make starting more secure so there is not a chance that the bar with the chain hits any part of your body.
