Within the painting on the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel of Rome, Michelangelo depicts "The Creation of Adam", in which God and Adam touch fingers, representing the creation of human life. Upon closer inspection, writes Dr. Frank Meshberger in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the "heaven" in which God and angels float is shaped like a human brain. The different parts of the organ are distinct, including the cerebellum, optic nerve, and pituitary gland. God's green sash, for example, is the vertebral artery. What does it mean? Michelangelo believed in a philosophy called Neoplatonism, which attests that intellect is a divine gift, so the painting may be his expression of that idea. Or, as he believed the Church was corrupt, it might have been a suggestion that God was the creation of a human brain (i.e., not real). I have wondered if, as society indulges in drugs and alcohol to a damaging extent within the body, the mind in some cases remains damaged even after the acts. Some of us develop messianic complex events, imagined roll playing, delusions of, if not grandeur, then delusions of something other than our true self identities.

Ergo, the lines, "makes me think I am not what I am." And, "makes me think I can not what I can."

Please forgive my use of the Christ figure within the song. It is in no way meant to demean that Christian deity, but to illustrate how a troubled mind creates troubles.

In other words, I guess, "think happy, healthy thoughts". .....and such, Chuck.

WHEN I SEE, copyright chuck Picklesimer 2011

When I see the Jesus Christ
Hanging out inside of me
I think I walk on water, make it wine.
When I see the Jesus Christ
Peering out behind my eyes
I think I'm in a tomb and roll away big stone
A hundred final times.

Too much youth on wine and weed.
Too much time on LSD
Makes me think I am not what I am.
Too much wasted nights and days.
Too much fog and purple haze
Makes me think I can not what I can.

When I see the Jessie James
Hiding out inside my brain
I think I'm robbing banks and robbing trains.
Load my gun with molded lead
Hunt Pinkertons until they're dead
Fix that picture hanging on the wall.
Turned my back on Robert Ford
Now I'm laying on the floor.
That Jessie James inside of me
Ain't Jessie James at all.

Too much youth on wine and weed.
Too much time on LSD
Makes me think I am not what I am.
Too much wasted nights and days.
Too much fog and purple haze
Makes me think I can not what I can.

When I see the great John Prine
Playing playing outside in my mind
I think I'm writing songs and quitting weed.
But when I try to duplicate his wonder works
I speculate that I may need more chords
Than only three.

When I see the great John Prine
Laughing at my state of mind
My Jesus giving blessings, robbing trains
Put a hot one through my heart
As I empty out my head into my
Dead --icated art.

Too much youth on wine and weed.
Too much time on LSD
Makes me think I am not what I am.
Too much wasted nights and days.
Too much fog and purple haze
Makes me think I can not what I can.

Or as Popeye the sailor says,
"I yam what I yam".

  • I've often wondered why humans are so interested in altered consciousness. Alcohol and drugs are fairly cross-cultural I think. But even meditation or kids spinning around until they're dizzy. I know for myself I don't like it much when people confront my delusions. If I faced what a mutt I really am I might have to go running for the prozac myself.

  • @dmio2 hi Dan. i hear you. however, it has occured to me once or twice that you, the Fog, are the drug of choice. listening to some of your lyrics can be mind altering. concerning meditation, of that i approve. when we put our brains into neutural for a bit, we can then accept information without impending the knowledge flow via pre-conceived judgments and values. those "shields" become habit and habit cuts the groove a little deeper with each go around. peace and love, chuck
