Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 72b
This is one of the four versions of the overture to the opera "Fidelio" by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). In this 1950 performance, the great German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam.
Can someone please explain me why every recording and live performance I've heard of this overture so far play the beginning adagio molto molto molto, when on the score it just says "adagio"? Everyone conduct it about twice as slow as it indicates.
