September 2011, New York, NY: Marathon runners young and old came out to Randall's Island in New York City on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 to honor soldiers and first responders with a "Heroes Run."
The annual 9/11 Heroes Run is a series of 5K marathons across the nation with proceeds going to military families.
The New York City Origins of the 9/11 Heroes Run
The 9/11 Heroes run, hosted by the Travis Manion Foundation, is named for the USMC 1st Lieutenant killed in action in Iraq. Before leaving for his second and last deployment to Iraq, Lt. Manion spent a day with Rescue One in Manhattan - the first responder unit which nearly lost all their men on 9/11. Upon his return home before he departed for Iraq, Manion gave his father, a Marine veteran, a Rescue One hat with the inscription "Never Forget."
GM Foundation and Chevrolet Support 9/11 Heroes Run
To support the 9/11 Heroes Run, the GM Foundation and Chevrolet made a total donation of
$250,000 to the Travis Manion Foundation.
The winner of the NYC 9/11 Heroes Run was 30 year old Algerian born Nini Benbowzid. His message, is the hope for world peace and for all to work together to solve food availability and health care issues in the world.

In the morning hours of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, an estimated 600 runners commenced their "Heroes Run" in Philadelphia.

The Women's Division winner of the Philadelphia 9/11 Heroes Run was Caitlin Harrington of Bucks County, the Men's Division winner was Wade Gerhard of Philadelphia.
Doylestown 9/11 Heroes Run
After a reflective pre-race ceremony, over 1,200 runners in Doylestown, PA began their 9/11 Heroes Run in Burpee Park.
The Women's Division winner of the Doylestown 9/11 Heroes Run was Kristen Haughey Prendergrast of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The Men's Division winner was Greg Watson of Doylestown, PA.
