Waist tape (aka stay tape) is a strong piece of non-stretch tape or ribbon that is placed around the point of the most stress on the corset - the smallest part of the waist. This helps prevent stitches from breaking at the waist and preserves the life of the corset.

Here I show how to insert a waist tape into your corset in such a way that when the corset is completed, it's not visible from the outside or the inside (this is called a hidden or invisible waist tape).

  • When you are marking on the waist tape, are you just outlining the shape of each panel onto it? And I couldn't quite tell which part of the corset you were attaching it to.....Is it the seem allowance on each of the lining panels?

  • @icowle85 The lines I draw on the tape give me the width of each panel at the waistline so it helps me not make the tape too tight or too loose when it's sewn into the corset. I'm basting the waist tape to the seam allowances of each panel to keep it in place, then when I sewed my boning channels later on, this "locks" the tape so it can't pull out. It's the easiest way I've found to make sure there aren't any obvious stitches (inside or outside) to keep the tape in place.

  • Where did you find that fabric at? <3

  • @ElaineKnight1709 I found this at Fabricland in the Chinese Brocade section! I'm not sure if all locations have it but I've seen it in several different locations. It's a poly brocade so it's kind of slippery to work with, but it's not too expensive. :)

  • Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! I'm so happy you made these video's on corset construction. Very detailed and easy to understand. I am an expert tailor and this tutorial (corset making) has provided me another level of expertise in garment construction. Thanks a million!

  • @w8tin4him I'm so pleased you like it! I'm no professional corsetiere (yet!), so positive feedback from an expert tailor like you is very flattering. :)

  • @bishonenrancher Thank you. I'll have to check to see if I have any near me. =D It's really pretty.

  • So when do we get to see this finished corset? Looks beautiful so far...

  • @ctsittin Good question! :) I fused the fashion fabric with medium weight interfacing and then flatlined that to coutil. The lining is also just coutil, so the bones (and busk) will be sandwiched between two layers of coutil.

  • Sorry, but what did you line the fashion fabric with? In your last video you recommended we try not to use the fashion fabric as top layer for boning channel because it'll tear through.
