Oh let me guess....you're better? oh ok. Let me guess again? You're from a snobby folk band that gets no work because you're too good? I see. How on earth can you criticise this?? Sunas are brilliant, and what's more, they're taking this sort of music to a wider audience. Stay in your bedrooms, snobs.
We have in Australia a vibrant community of people who strive to play (and many who succeed in playing) musically and culturally authentic and high quality Irish or Scottish music. With no offence intended to them personally, I don't think the members of this band strive for nor achieve these aims. I say this not out of spite or sour grapes at their success, but only out of the strong belief that what they do lowers the bar on the music that means everything to me.
Sunas have had a lot of success with mostly 'celtic'-inspired, 'willowy' and/or 'fiery' songs and with a few of these sorts of sets thrown in and fair play to them, it's very hard to make a living playing anything that vaguely falls under the category of 'folk music' in Australia. But. If you are a player of tunes, Irish, Scottish or anything else, please don't think this video is representative of any of these styles of music as rendered in Australia.
Lowers the bar? Who are you?
What is wrong with this music??
