A video of me throwing with an atlatl at a World Atlatl Association event at Meadowcroft, Avella, PA.

I admit to having fairly lousy form. I stand upright (bow legs and all) a bit like a baseball pitcher. I don't know if this is inherently good or bad but it's what felt natural to me.

The footage at the end was captured with an Oregon Scientific ATC-2K camera strapped to a dart.

  • you can use copper pipe to join a 4' dowel and a 2' dowel of the same diameter. use gorilla glue to connect them. and what type of atlatl are you guys using? i have a kuikuru

  • @mangoakda My atlatl is the Wyalusing model from Thunderbird Atlatl.

  • @CaptKordite I just bought the same model. Mine came in just this week. How easy is it to use? This is my first Atlatl. Mine is made of cherry wood BTW I'm not sure if the type of wood it's made of has a bearing on it's performance.

  • @Lukos0036 I find it quite easy to use. Basically, the motion is as if you are throwing a stick, you simply don't let go. A good way to start is to go out into a large field and try just throwing up into the air. Once you get comfortable with that and get the motion down, you can start throwing at a target. The World Atlatl Association has it's standard throws at 15 and 20 meters.

The material has little or no affect on performance, at least when it comes to fairly rigid materials such as wood.

  • @nicktohzyu Works for me, I happen to be gay. =D

  • @Lukos0036 make your own buying is gay :D

  • @bigabs18281 The Spanish call it "Estolica", the French call it "Propulseur", in Germany it's called the "Speerschleuder". They have found examples in France dating back some 15 thousand years (may need correction) made of antler carved into elaborate animal designs. Every culture everywhere has used them. Some, Australian aboriginals included, still do.

  • @Lukos0036 oh right,, well the black fellas here were using them til last week!! :)

  • @bigabs18281 Atlatl is the Aztec name for what is basically the same thing. Cultures all over the world used these till roughly the early bronze or late stone age. The Aztec were just the most recent culture in the northern hemisphere to use them. To measurable effect against the Spanish I might add. So their name stuck.

  • nice shot

  • woomera. invented by the australian aborigines... never heard of a atlatl

  • @CaptKordite cool ....we are learning about these tools in social studies class and our teacher brought one of these in so we could try....it was awsome!
