@ElvisSacramento I first heard this song in the early sixties by Hedy West. I'm pretty sure (not positive) that she recorded it before the Highwaymen. In any case, she is the one responsible for popularizing it during the folk revival. People like PP&M, The Kingston Trio and Pete Seeger learned it from her.
In any case, Fiddlin' John Carson recorded it before Hedy or The Highwaymen. His version, called 900 Miles, is on Youtube. Enter 900 Miles Fiddlin' John Carson in the browser.

it was recorded in 1973 at sam tompson elviss bodyguard home elvis is singing with his new women linda tompson sam is her brother i have full tape of this and others recorded at the time
