Re: Caballe cancelling performances. My dad was at a performance of Andrea Chenier at Vienna State opera in the late 70's or early 80's when Caballe cancelled mid performance. The performance stopped and the audience went home. No understudy waiting in the wings, I guess! He never heard why as he didn't speak German.

"Went wild?" I would have peed my pants in excitement! What a great duet, perfect in timber and voices--a marriage! Thank you for posting! Chenier is one of my favorite operas!

I was at this performance. Madame Caballe had not been singing at the Met for some months, and their was great anticipation as to whether she would show. When she walked on the stage, there was a sigh of relief and of course the audience went wild!

This duet was well done. However, Caballe is incomparably the better singer. Her voice soars over the Met orchestra whereas Carreras is often drowned out. So Chenier is not a good role for him, but there are not many tenors who can accomplish this supremely difficult role. Perhaps, only Franco Corelli could do it and also Richard Tucker.

I think in Catalan, his name should be spelled Josep, without the H.
