Researchers at Dukes Sarah W. Stedman Nutrition and Metabolism Center, and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in Florida, have announced a new collaborative research program that will use the power of metabolomic profiling to help advance the concept of personalized medicine. Dr. Chris Newgard from Duke, and Dr. Dan Kelly from Burnham, made the joint announcement on September 17, 2009.
Dr. Chris Newgard said I think what really excites both Dan Kelly and myself is what the future could bring, because with this foundation installed, the hope is that wed be able to synergize in the development of newer and state of the art metabolomics tools, such that well end up, in the end, building something jointly, that is far stronger than either one of us could build alone.
Metabolomic profiling is a highly sophisticated technology with potential application to every possible disease process. Dukes Stedman team recently applied metabolomic technologies to uncover new mechanisms by which over-nutrition and obesity lead to insulin resistance, an important contributing condition to type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Dan Kelly said In our searches around the country, and in my interactions, we knew that the Stedman Center at Duke University had developed this platform and they were very interested in collaborating with us, due to our other outstanding technology platforms such as small molecule screening and the fact that were bringing in scientists interested in metabolism. So it has been a win-win situation for both groups.
Dr. Chris Newgard said It seems natural for us to look for ways to ally to make a southeastern regional presence in metabolic disease research, so thats one of the things thats very attractive, to join forces in our region, and see if we cant do things synergistically.
The collaboration between the Stedman Center and Burnham will begin this fall.
