The robot like things are 'Zoromes' Invented by Neil R Jones for his professor jameson series of books by ACE now out of print.

Each Zorome contained an organic brain from originally a Zorome organic from Zor.

The machine men would be eternal and only die when their brain case would be damaged. Arms, tentacles etc could easily be replaced when worn.
